Leather and webbing are the two belts a wardrobe needs, and they are not interchangeable. A leather belt takes a formal shoe and sits under a jacket without drawing attention, so it is the one that goes to a wedding and to work on Monday. A webbing belt is the weekend version, adjustable anywhere along its length rather than at fixed holes, which is why it suits a short and a chino. The buckle settles the rest. A plain buckle disappears against a shirt, and a branded buckle is the visible half of the belt.
Getting the Belt Size Right
A belt is bought on the waist measurement, not the trouser size. A belt size is taken to the middle hole, not to the end of the strap, so it will not match the number on a pair of jeans. Men's accessories sits alongside with the wallets, the caps and the bags. Measure a pair of trousers you already wear, buy to that, and the buckle lands in the middle with room to move either way.
