The four that do the quiet work sit at the front of the drawer for a reason. A navy chino goes under any shirt you own without a thought. Black covers an evening when there is nowhere to change beforehand. Grey is the underrated one, doing what navy does without the office attached. Desert beige is the summer version of the same idea, and it is the only one of the four that dislikes a dark shoe. Beyond those four a trouser starts having an opinion. A tan khaki reads as outdoors even indoors, and it changes what a plain top is doing above it. The indigo and mid blue denims belong to the weekend and want a lighter shoe under them. None of these are first pairs.
