A knitted beanie covers the part of a head that goes cold first on an open platform. Gloves are the difference between having hands and having two objects on the ends of your arms. None of this is complicated. It is that the coat takes all of the thought and all of the budget, and then the standing about in the cold is done by the small things nobody planned for.

The version of this that works is buying them at the same time as the coat, in April, when nothing is urgent and there is still a choice.
