Check, checked, plaid and flannelette all describe the same shirt and we use each of them because our customers do. What varies underneath the pattern is the cloth. Brushed flannelette is soft and warm and worn open over a tee through winter. A crisper cotton check holds a collar and buttons up properly. Corduroy and denim take the same shape heavier again, at which point the shirt stops being a shirt and starts being the outer layer.

Long and short sleeve come out close to even, because they are bought for opposite halves of the year and both get used. A short sleeve resort print is a summer shirt in the proper sense, cut loose, worn open, and not asking to be tucked.
