A backpack is the only bag that leaves both hands free, which is why it survives the commute, the campus and the flight while everything else gets swapped out. The decision inside the category is smaller than it looks. Capacity sets the floor: enough for a laptop and a day, or enough for a weekend. After that it is the back panel and the straps that decide whether it stays comfortable once it is loaded, and the finish that decides whether it reads as luggage or as part of what you are wearing. Rucksack and backpack are the same thing, and we use both because our customers do.
Choosing a Black Friday backpack or tote
A tote answers a different question. It carries flat, opens in one movement and suits the trip where a pack is more than the situation needs, which is most trips into town. It is the wrong bag for a full day out and the right one for an afternoon. Between the two, the test is how long it spends on your shoulders. The longer that is, the more the straps and the back panel decide the outcome, and the sooner a tote stops being the comfortable option.
