A checked overshirt does a jacket's job while still looking like a shirt, which is why the pattern suits the shape so well. You keep it on at a desk, at a bar and on a train, and it never looks like you forgot to take your coat off. In winter it goes under a proper jacket and adds a layer without adding bulk at the shoulder.
